About

My name’s Natalie, and Monkey Sew Monkey Do is my company.

I guess I started this whole thing out when I learned to sew from my Grandma Eva, back  in Texas. I think I was about 10 years old. She bought me my first machine, a Baby Lock Companion (which I still use). Since then I have been making my own clothes and I truly enjoy it. For me, fashion is the easiest and foremost way to express myself individually. It has a utility as well;  As much as I would love to actually be a monkey, alas I am a civilized human and must wear clothes every day. Oh, But what fun! Personal style is my art.

Monkey Sew Monkey Do started in 2007 with the tremendous support of Gabe Shaughnessy, Aaron Rogosin, and Jack Crocifisso. Those guys contributed their incredible photography and graphic design skills to my work.

I use various recycled items for some custom garments and accessories. I also use bamboo, soy, and organic cotton fabrics for my underwear line. Bamboo is a great alternative to other fabrics. As a crop it is easy to grow without pesticides and matures quickly. Bamboo fibers are naturally antibacterial, which makes them excellent for undergarments. And do you know how soft it is?

I have done my research though, and the textile industry still has a huge imapact on the planet.  The process of making bamboo fabric is still not as environmentally friendly as I would like it to be. However, at this point, any step towards less impact is a clear choice for me. I hope you’ll agree.
